What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed web standard (from llmstxt.org, September 2024) that gives large language models a clean, markdown-formatted summary of your website. It lives at your site root, like robots.txt, and lists your most important pages with short descriptions.

While robots.txt controls access, llms.txt provides context. The two files work together: robots.txt decides which bots get in, and llms.txt helps AI systems understand what they find. Read our full llms.txt guide for the complete picture.

llms.txt format rules

  • Starts with an H1 heading with your site or project name (required)
  • Followed by a blockquote with a one-line summary
  • Optional paragraphs with more detail
  • H2 sections group related links: - [Title](url): description
  • An ## Optional section marks lower-priority URLs that AI can skip when context is limited
